Augustus is known for the beauty and variety of its music ministry. Listed below are some musical opportunities to serve God and build relationships with other members and friends of Augustus.
Chorister Academy at Augustus
The Chorister Academy at Augustus is one of the best ways in the Philadelphia region to provide your child with a tuition-free, world-class music education.
Our highly-regarded chorister program provides children and youth ages 7 - 17 with outstanding professional choral training, music theory instruction, leadership development, choir camps and trips. No previous musical experience is required, only an eagerness to learn and the ability to match pitch.
The Chorister Academy is open to families of all faith backgrounds and walks of life. Choristers, through their shared pursuit of musical excellence, develop focus, empathy, and teamwork skills as they build lasting friendships along the way.
During the academic year, choristers rehearse on Thursday afternoons from 4:00-5:30 and on Sunday mornings at 9:30, before the 10:30 service of Holy Communion. Choristers are trained to sing on a professional level and join adults in the Augustus Parish Choir to form a cohesive intergenerational choir. The choir sings a broad range of choral repertoire from the 16th century to present day.
We accept new students throughout the year but encourage families to register for the upcoming fall season, if possible. Please complete a Chorister Academy Interest Form and Dr. Roland will be in touch shortly!
Augustus Parish Choir
The Augustus community worships in the Lutheran tradition, with a strong emphasis on preaching, hymn-singing, and choral music. The Augustus Parish Choir sings weekly for the 10:30 Sunday morning service of Holy Communion during the academic year and leads worship for additional services during the Christmas and Easter seasons.
The choir includes section leaders and experienced volunteer singers. Choristers from the Chorister Academy at Augustus are trained to sing on a professional level and join these adults to form a cohesive intergenerational choir. The choir’s repertoire embraces music from many different styles and school of composition, ranging from the 16th century to present day.
Adult singers rehearse on Thursday evenings beginning at 7:00 and on Sunday mornings at 9:30. If you are interested in joining the choir, please contact Dr. Darryl Roland at music@augustustrappe.org.
Augustus Handbell Choir
The Augustus Handbell Choir provides participants with a unique musical experience. Ringers are assigned a specific number of bells and rely on one another to present a complete musical composition.
Previous musical experience isn’t required. Ringers learn to read music, develop rhythm skills, and increase coordination along the way. The process is creative and fun with ringers learning several techniques that produce a variety of musical effects. In addition, handbell ringing brings people of all ages and backgrounds together to foster camaraderie and a shared purpose.
The Augustus Handbell Choir provides special music throughout the year and rehearses on Thursday evenings at 6:00. The handbell choir is open to youth and adults. If you would like to become part of this ministry, please contact Dr Roland at music@augustustrappe.org.
Choir Camp at Augustus
Choir Camp is scheduled during the 4th week in June, Monday - Thursday afternoons from 12:00 - 4:00. Families can also register for Augustus Vacation Bible School during that week from 9:00 - 12:00. Campers are introduced to a wide range of activities that are engaging and fun, including voice lessons, songs,
music literacy, sight singing, and handbell ringing! Following a week of great singing, many of our campers decide to join the Chorister Academy in the fall!
Chorister Academy Support Group
The Chorister Academy Support Group includes family members and other parishioners who are interested in promoting the program to our Trappe community and surrounding region. Support Group members who have a variety of skill sets, experience, and interests can volunteer in different capacities, including but not limited to organizing carpools, assisting with Choir Camp, serving as second adults with clearances for rehearsals, etc.
